Seaside Museum & Historical Society receives a grant
from the Oregon Historic Trails Fund of the
Oregon Community Foundation

Seaside, Ore. – The Seaside Museum and Historical Society is the recipient of a $3,590 grant from the Oregon Historic Trails Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation to support “The Lewis and Clark Saltmakers Return” interpretive program on the beach in Seaside, Oregon.

“The Lewis and Clark Saltmakers Return” is sponsored by the Seaside Museum & Historical Society in partnership with Fort Clatsop National Memorial. This program of characters in first person is interpreting the men from the Corps of Discovery making salt from ocean water. The program in 2004 will be our fourth year of the presentation. The program is presented on two 48 hour week ends, from Friday at 5:00pm to Sunday at 5:00pm in July and August. The Saltmakers are on the beach in Seaside close to where the original Corp spent the winter in 1806. The professionally trained interpreters have gone through extensive training and know their characters, as well as the culture of the era. This free program has been very well received with over 4,000 persons participating each year.

The Oregon Community Foundation, established in 1973, manages charitable funds donated by individuals, families, and businesses to enhance and support the quality of life in their communities. Today, the foundation’s endowment consists of more than 800 funds with combined assets of $400 million. The foundation makes grants through an application process that involves local citizens in the review and evaluation of requests for funds.
