Salt Makers exhibit on display at Seaside Museum
Lewis’ spelling adds charm to title of event
SEASIDE — The Seaside Museum and Historical Society will unveil its newest exhibit, “…as Salt is an Objt” at a special open house from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday.
The exhibit details the story of the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery’s salt makers at present-day Seaside. The exhibit examines the salt maker’s experience from both a scientific perspective (“How many BTUs were needed to produce 31/2 bushels of salt?”) and human perspective (the daily life of a salt maker). It also features extensive quotes from the journals of the explorers.
The exhibit’s title is a quote by Meriwether Lewis from Nov. 24, 1805.
The exhibit was designed by Barbara Minard, Fred Mattfield and Lisa Mattfield, professional exhibit designers who specialize in Lewis and Clark and Pacific Northwest history.
Their work may also be enjoyed at Fort Clatsop National Memorial and the Ilwaco Heritage Museum. Funding was provided by the National Park Service Challenge Cost Share Program and the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial in Oregon/Oregon Heritage Commission.
The museum is open noon to 3 p.m. daily. Admission is $2 adults 18 and older, $1.50 seniors 62 and older, $1 children 13 to 18 and 12 and under free.
